How to calculate

Calculate cone volume, slant height, lateral area, and closed surface area from radius and perpendicular height.

Volume = πr²h ÷ 3; slant height = √(r² + h²); lateral area = πrℓ; closed area = πr(r + ℓ).

Worked example

Example inputs

Radius: 3 · Perpendicular height: 4

Example result

Volume: 37.699112 cubic units · Slant height: 5 units · Lateral surface area: 47.12389 square units · Closed surface area: 75.398224 square units

Assumptions and limits

Use the perpendicular height from the centre of the circular base to the tip. All length inputs must use the same unit.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

For a right circular cone, slant height follows the Pythagorean theorem. Volume is one third of a cylinder with the same base and height.

When this tool is useful

Calculate a cone’s volume, slant height and surface area.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
RadiusEnter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000.
Perpendicular heightEnter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000.

Frequently asked questions

Is slant height the input height?

No. Input the perpendicular distance from the base centre to the tip. The tool calculates the slant height separately.
