How to calculate

Compare multiple products by unit price and identify the best value and savings.

Unit price = product price ÷ quantity. Savings compare each product with the lowest unit price for the same unit.

Worked example

Currency: USD. Product A: 12 USD for 500 g. Product B: 20 USD for 1,000 g.

Best value: Product B ; Lowest unit price: 0.02 USD/g; Highest unit price: 0.02 USD/g; Savings versus highest unit price: 4.00e-3 USD/g.

Assumptions and limits

Compare products using the same quantity unit and consider quality, waste, delivery, taxes, and pack usability separately.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Unit price calculation divides each product price by its quantity. The lower cost per unit is better value on price alone; use the same quantity unit so the comparison is meaningful.

When this tool is useful

Calculate price per unit and compare different pack sizes, such as 500 grams and 750 grams of the same product.

Frequently asked questions

How is unit price calculated?

Divide the total product price by its quantity. For example, 12 USD for 500 g is 0.024 USD per gram.

Why can the unit prices look almost equal?

Small per-unit differences can matter across a large pack. Extra display precision is useful here so rounding does not hide the difference.

Does the cheapest pack have the lowest unit price?

Not always. A larger, more expensive pack can still cost less for each gram, litre, or item.
