How to calculate

Convert distance and time into min/km, min/mile, km/h, and mph.

Pace = total time ÷ distance; speed = distance ÷ total time.

Worked example

Distance: 5; Distance unit: km; Hours: 0; Minutes: 30; Seconds: 0.

Pace per kilometre: 6:00 min/km; Pace per mile: 9:39 min/mi; Average speed: 10 km/h; Average speed: 6.21 mph.

Assumptions and limits

Uses overall average elapsed time, including stops if they are included in the entered duration.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Pace is the time taken per kilometre. A lower pace value means faster movement; average speed describes the same trip as distance per hour.

When this tool is useful

Convert a completed run’s distance and time into an average pace.

Frequently asked questions

Does average pace show how fast each kilometre was?

No. It averages the whole activity. Split times are needed to see changes during the run.

Should I include stopped time?

Include it for elapsed pace or exclude it for moving pace. Use the same convention when comparing runs.
