How to calculate

Calculate paid hours for a shift, including overnight shifts.

Paid time = elapsed shift time − unpaid break

Worked example

Start time: 09:00; End time: 17:30; Unpaid break (minutes): 30.

Paid hours: 8 ; Paid minutes: 480 .

Assumptions and limits

An end time before the start is treated as the next day. Equal times mean a zero-length shift; shifts must be shorter than 24 hours.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Paid time is the interval between start and end after subtracting the break. It describes the entered shift, not a payroll policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can the shift run overnight?

An end time earlier than the start is treated as the following day. This simple time-only model is not intended for shifts longer than a day.

Does it handle overtime or payroll rounding?

No. Apply the relevant overtime rate, break rules and payroll rounding separately.
