What is density in physics?

Density is mass per unit volume. The formula is density = mass ÷ volume, commonly expressed in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³) or grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³).

How to calculate

Solve for density, mass, or volume with common metric units.

Density = mass ÷ volume; mass = density × volume; volume = mass ÷ density.

Worked example

Solve for: density; Mass: 10; Mass unit: kg; Volume: 2; Volume unit: m3; Density: 5; Density unit: kgm3.

Density: 5 kg/m³.

Assumptions and limits

Assumes uniform bulk density. Temperature, pressure, porosity, and material composition can affect measured density.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Density expresses mass per unit volume. The result is in kilograms per cubic metre when the shown input units are used.

When this tool is useful

Compare a measured mass and volume with an expected material density.

Frequently asked questions

Can the volume be zero?

No. Density divides by volume, so volume must be positive.

Does temperature affect density?

Often yes. Expansion or contraction changes volume. Compare measurements made under suitable, consistent conditions.
