How to calculate

Compare annual energy costs for an EV and a petrol car.

Annual EV energy cost = distance*electric/100*tariff; Annual petrol cost = distance*petrol/100*fuel; Annual energy saving with EV = distance/100*(petrol*fuel-electric*tariff)

Worked example

Annual distance (km): 20000; EV consumption at charger (kWh/100 km): 20; Electricity price per kWh: 0.2; Petrol consumption (L/100 km): 8; Petrol price per litre: 1.5.

Annual EV energy cost: 800 ; Annual petrol cost: 2,400 ; Annual energy saving with EV: 1,600 .

Assumptions and limits

Yes. Use charger-side energy consumption here, or adjust battery-side consumption to include charging losses. Vehicle price and other ownership costs are separate.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

The comparison covers energy only at the entered consumption and tariffs. A negative saving means the EV energy cost is higher.
