Growth Rate Calculator

Calculate numerical change, percentage growth, average change per period, and annualized growth.

What does growth rate mean?

Growth rate is the change from a starting value to an ending value, divided by the starting value. Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. CAGR is different because it annualizes compounded growth over several periods.

How to calculate

Calculate numerical change, percentage growth, average change per period, and annualized growth.

Change = ending value − starting value; growth = change ÷ starting value; annualized growth = (ending ÷ starting)^(1 ÷ periods) − 1.

Worked example

Starting value: 10000; Ending value: 15000; Number of periods or years: 5.

Numerical change: 5,000 ; Total percentage growth: 50 %; Average numerical change per period: 1,000 ; Annualized compound growth: 8.45 %.

Assumptions and limits

Annualized compound growth requires positive starting and ending values. Average change per period is linear and is not the same as CAGR.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

This growth rate calculator compares an ending value with its starting baseline. It separates total growth, average numerical change, and compound annualized growth so they are not mistaken for one another.

When this tool is useful

Calculate the growth rate of revenue, traffic, population, prices, or another quantity over one or more periods.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
Starting valueEnter a number of at least 0.000001 and no more than 1000000000000.
Ending valueEnter a number of at least -1000000000000 and no more than 1000000000000.
Number of periods or yearsEnter a number of at least 0.000001 and no more than 10000.

Frequently asked questions

How is growth rate calculated?

Total percentage growth is the ending value minus the starting value, divided by the starting value. The annualized result also accounts for the number of periods.

Is growth rate the same as CAGR?

No. Total percentage growth describes the whole interval. CAGR is the constant compounded rate that would connect the starting and ending values over the entered periods.

Can growth be negative?

Yes. An ending value below the starting value produces a negative numerical and percentage change.
