How to calculate

Convert solute mass to moles using molar mass, then divide by kilograms of solvent to obtain molality independently of solution volume.

Molality = m/M/s mol/kg; Solute amount = m/M mol

Worked example

Solute mass (G): 10; Molar mass (G/mol): 58.44; Solvent mass (kg): 0.5.

Molality: 0.34 mol/kg; Solute amount: 0.17 mol.

Assumptions and limits

Convert solute mass to moles using molar mass, then divide by kilograms of solvent to obtain molality independently of solution volume. Molality uses kilograms of solvent, not solution volume. Mole fractions assume exactly the two entered components and their actual amounts.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.
