How to calculate

Estimate training heart-rate zones from age and resting heart rate.

Estimated maximum = 220-age; Lower target = resting+(220-age-resting)*low/100; Upper target = resting+(220-age-resting)*high/100

Worked example

Age: 35; Resting heart rate: 65; Lower intensity (%): 50; Upper intensity (%): 85.

Estimated maximum: 185 bpm; Lower target: 125 bpm; Upper target: 167 bpm.

Assumptions and limits

Maximum-heart-rate equations are population estimates. Medicines and health conditions can change safe targets; seek clinical guidance when appropriate.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Estimate training heart-rate zones from age and resting heart rate. The displayed figures use the inputs and formula shown on this page.

When this tool is useful

Use the target heart rate to compare a scenario, check an estimate, or verify a manual calculation.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
AgeEnter a number of at least 18 and no more than 120.
Resting heart rateEnter a number of at least 30 and no more than 150.

Upper intensity (%)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 100.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before using the target heart rate result?

Maximum-heart-rate equations are population estimates. Medicines and health conditions can change safe targets; seek clinical guidance when appropriate.

Is this target heart rate result exact?

It is exact for the stated mathematical model and entered values. Real-world results can differ when rates, timing, fees, definitions or measurement conditions differ.
