How to calculate

Estimate the number of tiles for a floor or wall.

Tiles = ceil(area ÷ (tile length × width / 10,000) × (1 + waste ÷ 100))

Worked example

Surface area (m²): 20; Tile length (cm): 60; Tile width (cm): 60; Waste allowance (%): 10.

Tiles needed: 62 .

Assumptions and limits

Area-based estimate. Layout, cuts, and grout spacing affect the final count; round up to full packs when ordering.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Tile count converts the surface area into individual tile areas, applies your waste allowance, and rounds up to a whole tile.

When this tool is useful

Estimate an initial tile quantity before considering pack sizes and a detailed layout.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
Surface area (m²)Enter a number of at least 0.01 and no more than 1000000000000.
Tile length (cm)Enter a number of at least 0.01 and no more than 1000000000000.
Tile width (cm)Enter a number of at least 0.01 and no more than 1000000000000.
Waste allowance (%)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 100.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include grout spacing?

No. Grout joints, edge cuts and layout patterns require a more detailed plan.

Can I order exactly this number?

Suppliers may sell full boxes only. Round the tile count up to a complete pack and confirm the layout allowance.
