How to calculate

Waste diversion by massDiversion rate uses total material as the denominator. It does not measure avoided emissions, contamination or the environmental benefit of each route. Measure the share of a material stream recorded as reused, recycled or composted.

Diversion rate = (reused+recycled+composted)/(reused+recycled+composted+disposed)*100 %
Total measured material = reused+recycled+composted+disposed kg
Diverted material = reused+recycled+composted kg

Worked example

  • Reused material (kg): 100
  • Recycled material (kg): 250
  • Composted material (kg): 150
  • Disposed material (kg): 500
  • Diversion rate: 50 %
  • Total measured material: 1,000 KG
  • Diverted material: 500 KG

Assumptions and limits

Use disjoint measured mass categories over one scope and period. Local reporting definitions can differ; energy recovery is not included as diversion in this model.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Frequently asked questions

What assumptions should I check?

Use disjoint measured mass categories over one scope and period. Local reporting definitions can differ; energy recovery is not included as diversion in this model.

How can I check the result?

Start with the labelled example. Keep units consistent, calculate without intermediate rounding and change one input at a time. The diagram explains the model; the result table supplies the numerical answer.
