How to calculate

Find mean, median, range, and population standard deviation.

Mean = sum ÷ count; population variance = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ count

Worked example

Numbers (comma separated): 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.

Mean: 30 ; Median: 30 ; Range: 40 ; Population standard deviation: 14.14 ; Count: 5 .

Assumptions and limits

Accepts up to 1,000 finite numbers. Standard deviation treats your list as the whole population.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

The mean uses every value, the median is the middle of the sorted list, and the range spans its smallest and largest values. Population standard deviation measures spread around the mean.

Frequently asked questions

Is the standard deviation for a sample?

No. This tool divides squared deviations by the count N. A sample estimate usually uses N−1 and answers a different statistical question.

Why are mean and median different?

Extreme values can move the mean substantially while changing the median much less. Compare both when the list contains outliers.
