How to calculate

Convert decimal gigabytes into common decimal and binary storage units.

1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Worked example

Decimal gigabytes (GB): 1.

Megabytes (decimal): 1,000 MB; Kilobytes (decimal): 1,000,000 kB; Bytes: 1,000,000,000 bytes; Gibibytes (binary): 0.93 GiB; Mebibytes (binary): 953.67 MiB.

Assumptions and limits

Storage manufacturers commonly use decimal units, while some operating systems display binary units. GB and GiB are not the same.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000. Binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. The converter starts from decimal gigabytes and shows both systems explicitly.

When this tool is useful

Compare advertised drive capacity with software displays or convert file and storage sizes.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
Decimal gigabytes (GB)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000000.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a 1 TB drive appear smaller?

A manufacturer may label one trillion bytes as 1 TB, while software may divide by powers of 1,024. Formatting and system files can reduce usable space further.

Are gigabits and gigabytes the same?

No. A byte contains eight bits. Network speeds are often quoted in bits per second, while storage is usually quoted in bytes.
