How to calculate

Estimate download duration from size and connection speed.

Seconds = GB × 8,000 ÷ Mbps

Worked example

File size (GB, decimal): 5; Connection speed (Mbps): 100.

Estimated minutes: 6.67 min; Estimated seconds: 400 s.

Assumptions and limits

Decimal GB, not GiB. Ideal line speed; real downloads are slower due to overhead and network conditions.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Estimated duration divides file size in bits by connection speed in bits per second. It assumes the connection sustains that rate.

When this tool is useful

Estimate the ideal transfer time for a large file.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
File size (GB, decimal)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000000.
Connection speed (Mbps)Enter a number of at least 0.000001 and no more than 1000000000000.

Frequently asked questions

Are megabytes and megabits the same?

No. A byte contains eight bits. This model uses decimal gigabytes and megabits per second.

Why does a real download take longer?

Protocol overhead, server limits, congestion and Wi-Fi conditions can reduce effective throughput.
