How to calculate

Calculate the energy of a moving object.

Kinetic energy = ½ × mass × speed²

Worked example

Example inputs

Mass (KG): 1000 · Speed (m/s): 10

Example result

Kinetic energy: 50000 J

Assumptions and limits

Classical translational kinetic energy, suitable for speeds well below the speed of light.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Kinetic energy grows linearly with mass and with the square of speed. Doubling speed quadruples the calculated energy.

When this tool is useful

Explore a classical mechanics example for an object moving much slower than light.

Understanding your inputs

InputWhat to enter
Mass (kg)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000000.
Speed (m/s)Enter a number of at least 0 and no more than 1000000000000.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include rotational energy?

No. It models translational motion only. Rotation requires the moment of inertia and angular speed.

Can I enter km/h for velocity?

The input expects metres per second. Convert km/h by dividing by 3.6 first.
