Solar panel payback: calculate from your electricity bill

Estimate simple payback using installed cost, usable production, self-consumption and the tariff actually avoided.

Estimate annual usable production

Start with a realistic annual kWh estimate for the installed system, accounting for location, shade, orientation and system losses. Separate energy you use at home from energy exported to the grid. Those portions may have different values under your tariff or export agreement.

Work a simple payback example

Suppose installation costs 6,000 net of any confirmed incentives, and the system offsets 3,000 kWh each year at an avoided rate of 0.20. If there is no other benefit, annual bill saving is 600 and simple payback is 6,000 ÷ 600 = 10 years. This ignores maintenance, financing, degradation and future tariffs.

Test the weak points

Check whether a fixed bill charge remains, whether exports receive credit, and whether you actually use the generated electricity. Consider inverter replacement, roof work and contract conditions. A short simple payback does not equal investment return; compare cash flows over the useful life and use conservative production scenarios.
