Reverse sales tax: find the price before tax

Work backward from a tax-inclusive total using the correct formula, and distinguish removing tax from applying a discount.

Use division, not subtraction

When the tax rate is r, total = base price × (1 + r). Therefore base price = total ÷ (1 + r), with r expressed as a decimal. If a receipt total is 108 at an 8% rate, the pre-tax price is 108 ÷ 1.08 = 100 and tax is 8. Subtracting 8% of 108 gives 99.36, which is wrong because tax was charged on the base, not the total.

Check rounding and mixed rates

Some receipts round tax per item; others round after adding items. Multiple rates, exemptions, tips and shipping can prevent a single reverse calculation from reproducing every line. Check which amounts were taxable and the jurisdiction’s rounding rules. Use the sales tax calculator to move forward from an untaxed price and compare the total.

Tax removal is different from a discount

A 10% discount on a 100 base yields 90 before tax. Adding 8% tax gives 97.20 if that discount reduces the taxable price. By contrast, reversing 8% tax from a total of 108 yields 100, not 99.36.
