Passive responses remain in the denominator. Subtract the detractor percentage from the promoter percentage. Concept diagram; not to scale.

Calculate a net promoter score from counts in the three standard response groups.

Net promoter score = 100*(promoters-detractors)/(promoters+passives+detractors) points
Promoter share = 100*promoters/(promoters+passives+detractors) %
Detractor share = 100*detractors/(promoters+passives+detractors) %
Total responses = promoters+passives+detractors

Worked example

  • Promoter responses (9–10): 60
  • Passive responses (7–8): 25
  • Detractor responses (0–6): 15
  • Net promoter score: 45 points
  • Promoter share: 60 %
  • Detractor share: 15 %
  • Total responses: 100

Assumptions and limits

Use one survey question and period with disjoint response groups. The score ranges from -100 to 100 points and is not a response rate, satisfaction percentage or causal measure.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Calculate a net promoter score from counts in the three standard response groups. Passive responses remain in the denominator. Subtract the detractor percentage from the promoter percentage.

When this tool is useful

Passive responses remain in the denominator. Subtract the detractor percentage from the promoter percentage.

Frequently asked questions

What assumptions should I check?

Use one survey question and period with disjoint response groups. The score ranges from -100 to 100 points and is not a response rate, satisfaction percentage or causal measure.

How can I check the result?

Start with the labelled example. Keep units consistent, calculate without intermediate rounding and change one input at a time. The diagram explains the model; the result table supplies the numerical answer.
