How to count business days: weekends, holidays and start dates

Avoid off-by-one deadline errors by defining the workweek, start-day rule and holiday calendar before counting.

Define what a business day means

A business day is a day included in the schedule you choose. Monday to Friday is common, but it is not universal. A shop, bank, employer and courier may each use a different calendar. Before calculating, confirm the relevant workweek, holidays, time zone and any daily cut-off time.

Decide whether the starting day counts

Adding business days and counting days between two dates are different questions. For an example with a Monday-to-Friday workweek and no holidays, three business days after Friday are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when Friday is excluded. If the instruction explicitly counts Friday as day one, the third day is Tuesday. Write the chosen rule beside the result.

Add holidays without counting them twice

Suppose Monday is a holiday in the same example. With Friday excluded, three business days land on Thursday: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. A holiday that already falls on an excluded weekend removes no additional weekday unless the applicable calendar supplies a substitute day. Use the exact location and year rather than copying another country’s list.

Choose the right calculator

Use business days with its displayed workweek, holiday and inclusion controls for working-day counts. Check the controls before interpreting the answer. Use add days to a date for a calendar offset and date difference for elapsed calendar days. Calendar days include weekends, so five calendar days are not automatically one working week.

Check the result manually

For a short deadline, list each eligible date and number it. For a long interval, check the first and last partial weeks and all holiday exceptions. A result in dates does not account for a 2 p.m. order cut-off, courier transit guarantees or a contract’s legal definition. Confirm those separately.

Common questions

Does ten business days always mean two weeks? Only in a matching five-day schedule without relevant holidays, subject to the starting-day rule.

Can I use this for a legal deadline? Use the governing rule and official calendar, and obtain appropriate advice when consequences matter. This is a counting explanation, not a legal deadline determination. For bills, combine the dates with your monthly budget; for supplier comparisons, also check unit price.

Reference

The UK government holiday calendar illustrates why regional calendars and substitute holidays must be checked; it is not a global holiday list.

A five-day worked check

Monday 5 January through Friday 9 January 2026 contains five Monday-to-Friday working dates when both ends count. Excluding the start gives four. If Wednesday is an applicable holiday, the inclusive count is four. Adding five working days after Monday, with the start excluded and no holidays, reaches Monday 12 January. Match the calculator mode to the question.
