Days between dates: inclusive counting, nights and working days

Choose the right date-counting rule for stays, schedules and planning, with examples that explain the common one-day difference.

Decide what you are counting

“How many days?” can mean elapsed calendar days, named dates included in an event, overnight stays or working days. Write the rule before calculating. From 1 March to 5 March there are four elapsed days. Counting both named dates gives five calendar dates. The date difference calculator helps with the elapsed interval; include both endpoints only when your task requires it.

Use nights for accommodation

Arriving on 1 March and leaving on 5 March usually means four nights. Adding one because both dates appear on the booking would overcount nights. A five-day event spanning those dates may nevertheless include activities on five calendar dates. The same dates can legitimately produce different totals because the units differ.

Check leap days and calendar months

From 28 February 2028 to 1 March 2028 there are two elapsed calendar days because 2028 includes 29 February. The equivalent interval in 2027 is one day. A month is not always 30 days. Adding a calendar month to a month-end date depends on the tool’s rollover rule; use the date addition calculator and inspect the resulting date.

Separate dates from exact durations

A date-only calculation does not measure elapsed hours between timestamps. Around a daylight-saving transition, two local midnights can be 23 or 25 hours apart. For exact durations, record the time and timezone as well as the date. A hotel night and a 24-hour rental period are not interchangeable.

Working days need an additional calendar

Weekends differ by country and organization, and public holidays may need separate exclusion. Review business-day counting with weekends and holidays before using a result for scheduling. For a contractual or official deadline, follow the stated start-day, holiday and cutoff rules rather than assuming a generic calculator determines the deadline.
