Tip and split a bill: total first, then reconcile rounded shares

Calculate the tip on an agreed base, divide the final total, and settle a small rounding remainder without changing the bill.

Method

An equal bill split starts with the amount the group has agreed to pay. A percentage tip is its chosen base multiplied by the percentage divided by 100. Add the tip to the payable bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Keep the calculation unrounded until the final payment amounts; a displayed share and an amount that can actually be paid are not always identical.

The tip calculator uses its Bill amount both as the tip base and as the amount being shared. It has no separate tax-base or unequal-item inputs. If the payable bill is 110 but your chosen tip base is 100, a 15% tip is 15 and the total is 125. Calculate that tip separately with Percentage, then split 125 with a zero tip setting. This defines an arithmetic choice, not a tax rule.

From the tip base to the exact share
  1. Tip on the chosen base100 × 15 ÷ 100 = 15
  2. Bill plus tip100 + 15 = 115
  3. Exact equal share115 ÷ 3 = 38.333333…

Use one currency throughout. Calculate the total first and keep the equal share unrounded until payment.

Worked example

For the main example, use bill 100, tip 15% and three people. The tip is 15 and the total is 115. Each exact share is 38.333333… . In a currency paid to two decimal places, displaying 38.33 for everyone gives only 114.99. The missing 0.01 is a rounding remainder, not another tip or a change in the restaurant’s charge.

Enter Bill amount 100, Tip 15 and Number of people 3 in Tip & split bill. Check the displayed total before settling. One payment of 38.34 and two of 38.33 add to 115 exactly. The calculator displays an equal-share estimate; it does not assign the extra smallest unit to a named person. Agree that adjustment openly and check the sum of the actual payments.

⁦100 × 15 ÷ 100 = 15⁩

⁦100 + 15 = 115⁩

⁦115 ÷ 3 = 38.333333…⁩

⁦38.33 × 3 = 114.99; 115 − 114.99 = 0.01⁩

⁦38.34 + 38.33 + 38.33 = 115⁩

Three payments that reconcile to the bill
Payment 1
38.34 currency unitsIncludes the 0.01 rounding remainder
Payment 2
38.33 currency unitsRounded equal-share amount
Payment 3
38.33 currency unitsRounded equal-share amount

Assuming payment to two decimal places, this is one manual allocation of the 0.01 remainder. The payments sum to 115; the calculator does not choose who pays the extra unit.

Checks and limits

Two decimal places are an example, not a universal currency rule. Use the payment unit accepted for the currency and method, and reconcile to the actual payable total. Different meal charges need a separate allocation, not a change to the people count. Check whether service or gratuity is already included so it is not added twice. The illustrated 15% is not a recommendation or a statement of local law; receipt details and agreed payment terms remain essential.
