A larger batch spreads the same setup over more units, but does not automatically improve flow time or inventory performance. Concept diagram; not to scale.

Combine one setup and sequential unit processing into batch time and effective throughput.

Total batch time = setup+units*cycle/60 min
Effective batch throughput = units/((setup+units*cycle/60)/60) units/h
Setup share of batch time = setup/(setup+units*cycle/60)*100 %

Worked example

  • Units in batch: 120
  • Cycle time per unit (s): 30
  • Setup time per batch (min): 20
  • Total batch time: 80 min
  • Effective batch throughput: 90 units/h
  • Setup share of batch time: 25 %

Assumptions and limits

Assumes one sequential process, fixed cycle time, one setup and no overlap. Queues, breaks, scrap, downtime and parallel machines are excluded.

Results are rounded for display; calculations use unrounded values. Read our calculation methodology.

Understanding the result

Frequently asked questions

What assumptions should I check?

Assumes one sequential process, fixed cycle time, one setup and no overlap. Queues, breaks, scrap, downtime and parallel machines are excluded.

How can I check the result?

Start with the labelled example. Keep units consistent, calculate without intermediate rounding and change one input at a time. The diagram explains the model; the result table supplies the numerical answer.
