Annual mileage from two odometer readings

Estimate annual driving from actual readings, then compare the result with a weekly travel plan.

Method

Subtract the earlier odometer reading from the later one. Divide that distance by the number of elapsed calendar days, then multiply by 365. Use the same unit for both readings. This annualizes the observed interval rather than claiming that every future week will match it. A short holiday or unusually busy week can distort the estimate.

Worked example

A reading of 42,100 miles rises to 45,400 miles over 100 elapsed days. The difference is 3,300 miles, or 33 miles per day. Annualized distance is 33 × 365 = 12,045 miles. Compare that with a commute of 180 miles per week for 48 weeks plus 3,000 personal miles: 11,640 miles. The gap may reflect travel outside the normal commute.

What to check

Do not count both endpoints as an extra elapsed day. Keep a dated record and repeat the estimate over a longer representative interval. A lease allowance uses the contract’s dates and terms; this estimate does not change them. For cost planning, multiply mileage by an explicit cost per mile and keep fixed ownership costs separate.
