Business days: inclusive counts versus adding a deadline
Separate counting a date interval from moving forward a number of working days.
Method
Counting between dates can include both endpoints. Adding a deadline usually begins after the starting date. Choose the weekend pattern and enter holiday dates explicitly; a date is not automatically a holiday because it is celebrated somewhere. When a holiday falls on a weekend, exclude the day once. An observed replacement holiday must be entered separately.
Worked example
From Monday 5 January 2026 through Friday 9 January, an inclusive Monday–Friday count is five days. With Wednesday 7 January excluded, it is four. Starting on Monday and adding five business days, without holidays, instead reaches Monday 12 January because the starting day is not day one. These answer different questions.
What to check
Do not silently apply a country’s calendar or a contract rule. Check whether a deadline counts the receipt date, has a local cutoff time, or allows a weekend extension. The calculator models the dates, weekend pattern and holidays entered; it does not establish a legal deadline.
