Tire pressure in PSI, bar and kPa: check it cold

Convert tire pressure units correctly and find the recommended cold setting on the vehicle label instead of relying on the tire sidewall.

Convert the same pressure between units

1 bar is about 14.5038 PSI and 100 kPa. A reading of 35 PSI is about 2.41 bar or 241 kPa. These are equivalent measures, not different recommended settings. Use the pressure converter rather than rounding before you finish comparing labels.

Use the vehicle’s cold recommendation

The vehicle placard or owner’s manual gives the recommended cold inflation pressure, which may differ between front and rear tires. The number on a tire sidewall describes a tire limit, not the recommended pressure for every vehicle. Check pressure before driving or after the tires have cooled, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Read the tire pressure guide for where to find the label.

Interpret a warm reading carefully

Pressure rises as tires warm. Do not automatically release air from a warm tire merely to reach the cold specification; recheck when cold. A unit conversion cannot diagnose a leak or replace inspection of a damaged tire. If a warning persists, follow vehicle guidance or consult a qualified professional.
